Cavalry Battle [The Battle of Milvian Bridge (?)]

XVI century.
Not on display

The encounter between the two generals, one looking heavenwards at a vision as he is about to be struck by the other´s sword, suggests a composition of the Battle of Milvian Bridge, or the Battle of Constantine. In representations of this battle, however, the protagonist normally wears a Roman Emperor´s imperial wreath and not helmet, as shown here.

This is a replica of a drawing by Cambiaso in the British Museum, London (inv. no. 1946-7-13-296). Other drawn variations of the same composition from Cambiaso´s School include an example in the Witt Collection, the Courtauld Institute Gallery, London (inv. no. 2854); and another formerly on the art market, Munich.
