During his third year as a grant student in Rome in 1902 Sotomayor and the painter Manuel Benedito travelled to Paris, various Dutch cities and Bruges, where he made numerous sketches and drawings in its museums and of the places he visited. Used as preparatory studies for narrative compositions, Sotomayor particularly favoured these views of Bruges for the settings of his works of this period
