This and the previous drawing are connected with the figure of Fame In the Return of the victorious fleets to the port of Messina, one of six canvases illustrating the Battle of Lepanto painted by Cambiaso and his studio at the very end of the artist´s career. The cycle was originally conceived as part of the decoration of the Galería Grande of the Escorial.
