This is a portrait drawing of the painter in three-quarter length. He is leaning on the back of an armchair, staring at the viewer, and holding drawing charcoal in his right hand. The subject is framed in a cartouche or oval frame, in front of which we can see a palette, brushes, a painting stick, a drawing folder, and a roll of paper.

As the inscription indicates, this is a preparatory drawing for an engraving. The drawing copies Roslin’s canvas, painted in 1760 and currently kept in Versailles. The print, engraved in 1761, earned Carmona the title of Academician at the French Academy of Fine Arts the following year. This museum keeps a copy of Carmona’s print (G2963).

I. Villedary
La firma del papelero Jean Villedary aparece durante más de 150 años entre los siglos XVIII y XIX, bien con sus iniciales "IV" o con el nombre "I VILLEDARY". Churchill, en su repertorio de filigranas de 1985 supone que el primer Jean Villedary era de origen francés pero que después trabajaría, él o sus descendientes, en Hattem, Holanda. La contramarca "IV" fue pronto una señal de calidad del papel, por lo que varios papeleros la emplearon como Lubertus van Gerrevink, C. & I. Honig, Adriaan Rogge o Van der Ley.
