Partial copy of Michelangelo’s Last Judgment
XVI century.Not on display
This drawing is a copy of the rightmost group from the Choir of the Chosen in Michelangelo’s Last Judgement. It was made before Daniele da Voterra’s intervention, as Saint Catherine appears entirely nude. Saint Blas’s head is also practically sunk into his shoulders, whereas he stands straighter in the fresco. Xaver de Salas concluded that this drawing, along with one attributed to Becerra at the Biblioteca Nacional de España, are copies of Michelangelo’s original drawings, rather than of the completed fresco, as they do not appear to correspond to what was painted in a complete giornata, that is, in one day’s work (Text drawn from Pérez Sánchez, A. E., Catálogo de dibujos. I. Dibujos españoles de los siglos XV-XVI-XVII, Museo del Prado, 1972, p. 22).
