Saint Augustine
XVII century.Not on display
The saint wears pontifical vestments and kneels facing forwards between a crucifix and the Virgin with the Christ Child. This is quite a recurring depiction in the iconography of Saint Augustine: ‘I am in the middle, pulled by two magnets… where can I turn to?’ An architectural background can be observed.
The technique differs considerably from other drawings of his in the Prado; it recalls certain rapid, rough drawings attributed to Alonso Cano. It is undoubtedly the work of a follower of the Granada-born painter.
