In a note on the modern museum matte, Sylvie Béguin suggested that the drawing could be after Parmigianino (1980). The types are indeed Parmigianinesque but they may instead reflect the work of a member of the artist’s circle, for example Lelio Orsi (1508/11-1587), who was fond of drawing with the pen in an engraver-like style, using fine hatching and crosshatching.
