The Immaculate Conception
XVIII century. Red chalk, Red wash. Not on display
This preparatory study depicts a Virgin of the Immaculate Conception standing on clouds and the crescent moon, with her hands across her chest and her gaze lowered. On either side of her, two young angels appear kneeling. The composition is framed in a mixtilinear arch, indicating its use for an altar painting.
The attribution to Gregorio Bauzá (1590-1656), which was accepted in the 1959 Pontevedra exhibition, is entirely unacceptable. It is undoubtedly an 18th-century work.
