The Last Communion of Saint Jerome
Ca. 1829. Oil.On display elsewhere
On his deathbed Saint Jerome asks to receive holy communion in the presence of his followers, some of whom wear the habit of the Hieronymite Order. This is the most ambitious and largest work within Tegeo’s oeuvre. It looks to Italian classicising Baroque models, particularly to the work of Domenichino and Annibale Carracci. The canvas was commissioned for the presbytery of this church, to where it has recently been returned.
