The Virgin and Child with Saints Cecilia and Inez
Early Último cuarto del siglo XVI - XVII century. On display elsewhere
A nearly symmetrical composition in which the Virgin Mary sits on a throne between two kneeling female figures. A canopy over her head is flanked by two heavy green curtains with gold binding, pulled back on both sides. Facing the viewer with downturned gaze, the virgin wears a pink tunic and navy blue robes and holds the infant Jesus in her arms. The child holds a floral wreath to crown the martyred Saint Cecilia, who kneels at the left. Shown in profile, she looks downward with a meditative expression. Her long yellow period dress is completed by a white blouse. The floral wreath alludes to the ones with which she and her husband, Valeriano, were crowned by an angel when they were married and the groom confirmed his faith in God. The saint clasps a group of organ pipes to her bosom, symbolizing her patronage of musicians since the 16th century. Saint Inez, also shown in profile, kneels to the right of the Virgin, holding a palm frond and embracing a white lamb in reference to her name, which derives from the Latin agnus or lamb.
