The Virgin of Sorrows with Saint Francis, Saint Bonaventure and Saint Clare
XVIII century. Red chalk. Not on display
This drawing depicts the Virgin seated with her hands in her lap, her head raised, her face weeping and a dagger stuck in her chest (following her title of ‘Sorrows’ or ‘Virgin of Anguish’). She is surrounded by three saints: Saint Bonaventure, standing on her left and pointing to the monstrance he is holding in his left hand; Saint Francis, kneeling before the Virgin, and Saint Clare, on her right with her hands crossed on her chest.
It is a preparatory work for a canvas associated with the Franciscan Order.
