With the advent of photography, the technique of miniature painting was progressively abandoned. One noteworthy attempt to arrest this process was that of a group of French women artists, who tried to restore splendour to the art by placing the accent on one of the resources it offered, that of erotic intimacy with a somewhat anachronistic flavour, now wrought by feminine hands and endowed with a new decorative significance.
