Forty Years of Friendship. Donations from the Fundación Amigos del Museo del Prado
Museo Nacional del Prado. Madrid 9/14/2021 - 1/16/2022
On the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the Fundación Amigos del Museo del Prado, the exhibition is an appreciation and a celebration of the Friends that have given their support to the Museum. It will gather, for the first time in one single display, the works that the Fundación has donated to the Prado thanks to their generosity. The exhibition aims also to be illustrative and to encourage new donations.
The exhibition will include all the works that have been donated by the Fundación or with its contribution, with the exception of the three series of contemporary art, of which we will show a selection given the high number of works that they comprise. It will also include works donated to American Friends of the Prado Museum, which are at the institution on long-term loan.
The works will be organized in four sections, reflecting the different ways in which the Fundación has contributed to enriching the Museum collections. The first one, with the Virgin of the Pomegranate by Fra Angelico at its core, will show the majority of the donated works and its closing piece will be The Victorious Hannibal seeing Italy from the Alps for the first Time by Goya, a gift of the Fundación to the Museum on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary. In the second section we will display a selection of twelve of the total of almost one hundred works by contemporary artists who have been invited over the years by the Fundación to establish a dialogue with the Prado collections, and which the Fundación has gifted to the Museum. The third section will show those works that have been donated by the Committee of Drawings and Prints, which was created within the Círculo Velázquez in order to make donations of this type of works to the Museo del Prado. The last section will gather the works linked to the more international side of the Fundación, either donated by the International Board or by the American Friends.
