Juan Muñoz
Museo Nacional del Prado. Madrid 11/18/2025 - 3/8/2026
Juan Muñoz was an artist who established an ongoing dialogue with the history of art and whose work includes references to the art of different periods, particularly the Renaissance and Baroque. Muñoz grew up in Madrid and the Museo del Prado was one of his principal sources of inspiration. His work was influenced by artists of different periods, from Parmigianino to Goya, and he placed great importance on theatricality, illusionism and architecture as expressive resources. During his time in Rome he absorbed the influences of Borromini, Bernini and Piranesi. His relationship with Velázquez and Goya was fundamental for his works that feature figures with dwarfism while his interest in capturing fleeting moments in time reveals echoes of Velázquez. Like Goya, he explored the complex line between humour and violence. Juan Muñoz’s work offers a reflection on the viewer's perception and the relationship between stillness and movement.
