Judith at Holofernes' banquet

Accessible visit / Easy reading at the Prado Museum / Judith at Holofernes' banquet

In the past, various authors expressed their scepticism regarding the attribution of this painting to Rembrandt. However, the Rembrandt Research Project includes it in the Corpus (1986) as an original by Rembrandt, which confirms the technical study carried out at the Museo del Prado that same year. As for the signature, the lack of firmness in the line and, above all, the yellow colour make it doubtful, but the spelling Rembrant appears in various paintings dated 1633, in some engravings from 1632-33 and in the earliest documents signed by the painter. Moreover, the date is consistent with the artistic characteristics of that period of the painter's career. This scene is one of a small group of allegories personified by the figure of heroic women, i.e. goddesses or heroines of Antiquity and the Old Testament, which Rembrandt painted between 1633 and 1635.
