The Imposition of the Chasuble on Saint Ildephonsus
XVII century.Not on display
The Virgin is standing on the left part of the drawing. With the help of a young angel, she places the chasuble on Saint Ildephonsus, kneeling at his feet. Above, a group of angels hold the mitre, crozier and cross, the saint’s episcopal attributes.
The drawing is directly related, albeit with slight variations, with the canvas now preserved in the museum of Córdoba, probably from the convent of San Francisco in the same city, which was widely imitated at the time. Its technique differs from Castillo’s usual style since he rarely employed a sepia wash. This difference in technique together with its poor state of conservation preclude its acceptance as preparatory material for the painting and instead suggests that this drawing is by another artist that could have been a pupil.
