The Virgin of Help at her Altar
XVIII century. Coloured wash, Black chalk. Not on display
This drawing depicts the Virgin clothed, with a headdress and crown. She holds and shows the Christ Child with both hands before her.
The image, highly venerated in Madrid until the 19th century, was also known as the image of the Remedies. It was brought from Flanders and saved from the fire of the iconoclasts by a soldier from Cuenca, who placed it in the Cathedral of his city. Brought by the Order of the Barefoot Mercedarians to Madrid in 1573, it used to have its own chapel in the convent church, which was demolished at the time of the exclaustration.
It is probably by the same hand as D001946 and D001945.
